Ferren Wines

Frei Road Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

9.3

Even though I’m a big fan of Ferren’s Frei Rd Chardonnay, this was my first Frei Rd Pinot.

Not sure of normal experiences here, but the richness here seems to fall in between Rivers Marie (love) and Aubert (just so so for me). Darker color in the glass…bit of a purple tinge to it. Aromatically it sports potpourri, violets, underripe black cherries, underripe blue fruit and some cedar. Initially, the front palate seems like it will be heavy based on all of the flavors but it turns really elegant. Dark chocolate, a slight roasted character, and spicy fruits. With RM, I get that orange zest note, and with Aubert, I get more alcohol and kirsch. My in between note here is more ripe pomegranate than either of the others. These probably need 5-7yrs from vintage to be in a good spot. Followed over two days and stayed consistent.

@Bryan Kesting : I think there is some confusion. @David L ‘s comment was for the Chardonnay, but my post was for the Pinot. I definitely think the pinots need about 7yrs as this one at 5yrs was young! Or maybe everyone is wanting to discuss the chard!

Sorry for the confusion. I personally feel the 7 year mark is best for both the Pinot and Chardonnay…generally speaking. Im sure it also depend on vintage. My opinion.

@Bryan Kesting : Ah, got it. I haven’t had the Frei chard with that much age, but it sure was good at 4-5yrs, however, definitely young. I’ll do my best to hold a bottle.

Big full dark stone fruit with a hint of vanilla underneath. Tastes fresh but not rough/raw. Moderate aftertaste. Paired really well with spinach and ricotta ravioli. — 22 days ago

Dark cherries in the salad meet dark cherries.

If you love mid & dark, ripe fruits, spice, soft dry earth-dry gravel & stone, pronounced limestone, soft, fresh tobacco and cool climate acidity for days, spend $60-$65 on a Block 3 or 5 Pinot Noir. So good.

Both lettuces picked hours ago from my garden.

Gargiulo Vineyards

Money Road Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

PnP’d. Very robust nose of flowers and some vanilla. I smelled this the minute the cork came out. Lovely texture and very complex. Chocolate, vanilla, and cherries; some Amarone characteristics. Medium plus finish. — 23 days ago

Napoleone Vineyard Shiraz 2015

See previous notes. They still apply. A fragrant medium weight red wine where the small amount of Viognier plays its role with the red fruited aromatics. Amazing that a $30 wine would win the Trevor Mast Trophy for best Shiraz at the 2016 Royal Melbourne Wine Show. — 22 days ago

Joy Road Vineyard Chardonnay

Maybe not my favorite RM Chardonnay, still high quality wine, of course very young. Almost Big League Chew bubble gum flavors on night #1, My wife didn’t get that at all, oh well. Some toasty notes. — 22 days ago
