This is quite youthful and seems on the natty side, but not too much so. Also seems like it was deliberately picked on the not-quite-ripe side. The nose is super-bright, with crunchy little purple mountain berries and pink peppercorns. A bit of cured beef too. In the mouth, the acids are through the roof, overriding some nice, crisp, dark berry flavors. There is a bare hint of barnyard funk too. Very nice length. Overall it’s got a lot of character but seems a little disjointed. Picking a tad riper may have made a better wine, but it wouldn’t have made a “statement,” which I think was what was primarily behind this wine.

Reviewing the other posts, it appears that prior vintages had some issues with too early pick. I found the 2018 to have nice texture, and cedar? notes … it spends 12 months in barrel, and is unfiltered/unfined. 13% ABV seems low, but heading upward versus past years may indicate later pick.

Native yeast, whole cluster, neutral oak, unfiltered.

This def fits into the new Cali style of pick early and higher acid. It feels all sharp elbows and knees to me, picked too young to offer much fruit character.

Lots of character here. Obviously picked relatively early as evidenced by its 12.6%, the nose features lots of things other than ripe fruit. It’s got green peppercorn, ink, intense crushed rock minerality, a bit of spiced beef jerky. In the mouth it’s got nice balance, with an initial whack of minerally, pleasantly herbal flavors, crisp crunchy wild berry, and then good acids come in. Tannins are soft and unobtrusive. It’s really good “as is,” but I can’t help but wonder if a teeny bit more ripeness would take this to another level.

Halcon not Cardiac. Great nose, lean palate. Very enjoyable.

Halcon Vineyard Yorkville Highlands Syrah. Delicious and open-knit syrah. Candied blue fruits, deep violet tones, perfumed. There's this sweet/savory note to all the aromas and nothing particularly funky or meaty about it. Pure. The palate is so upfront and juicy with a nice freshness and acidity to it. Tannins are fairly elegant act more as a textural background to the fruit

Perfumed fresh Syrah with grilled steak ($20) Wonderful fragrance and mouth feel, surprised by the alcohol content of 12.5% , thought it was higher
