Wednesday Wine Committee. Great hosting by Gavin. 1 sparkler, 4 whites, 4 reds and 2 dessert wines. All served blind as usual.

Roasted chestnuts, cinnamon, old raspberry fig and a surprising amount of heat on the nose and palate. Shocked the alcohol is that prevalent at this age! Mellowed a bit slightly in the glass, and the added notes of graham cracker and potpourri became noticeable. I called this 40yr port.

Deep purple with garnet rim. Mint, dried haystack. Hints of fresh dark cherries on the nose. Fresh and dried dark currants and cherries. Violet. High acidity, medium smooth sweet tannins. 2000: cool wet spring reduced yields. 20% abv.

Porto is so out of fashion. I have no idea why since a number of highly rated “dry” wines carry substantial residual sweetness. Fashion is fashion. Hipsters will find this soon enough. 1977 was a time with Port if not in its heyday it was certainly much more highly regarded. This is just sensational. A fortified wine of great depth and dimension.

Heck of a hosting by @Weston Eidson last night for the City Club wine group. All wines were tasted blind.

Wonderful finish to the evening. It didn’t have as much sweetness to it as I normally think Graham’s does. Mixed berry compote, graham cracker, nutty, and cherry liqueur infused fig. My guess here was late 80s/early 90s port.

This was really faded and light in appearance. Lot of sediment. I guessed late ‘70s/early ‘80s port. More guessed early ‘70s. It tasted older than it was, actually. Old graham cracker, cocoa dusted dates, licorice and old, candied blackberries. Dusty.

Saline, fino, wild herbs, purple flowers and mushroom on the nose. Highly concentrated with a garnet rim. Moderate staining, high viscosity. Creme de cassis, black currants, with all forms of spearmint. Moderate plus acidity and moderate minus soft and well integrated tannins.

Deeply staining dark purple. High viscosity. Sour cherries, eucalyptus, and mint. Creme de cassis and beautiful minerality on the palate, with a peppery kick on the finish. Elevated acidity and soft integrated tannins.
