Feldmarschall Von Fenner Zu Fennberg Südtirol-Alto Adige Müller-Thurgau
The 2020 Müller-Thurgau Feldmarschall von Fenner bursts from the glass with a captivating mix of nectarine and lemon zest complicated by crushed rocks and curry leaves. This is texturally deep, flowing across the palate like pure silk. A saline mineral perfectly contrasts core citrus-tinged orchard fruits and ripe melon. The word salty doesn’t do this justice, as the 2020 finishes distinctively savory and intensely spicey, reverberating with residual acids that keep the mouth watering for more. While still relatively young, this is utterly fantastic. I can’t wait to see what a few years of cellaring might reveal. (Eric Guido, Vinous, May 2023)

May 5th, 2023The 2018 Müller-Thurgau Feldmarschall von Fenner from Tiefenbrunner is luminous gold in color with green hues in the glass. Its bouquet is stunning and perfumed with lime citrus-infused yellow flowers, white smoke minerality, wild herbs, green apple and savory exotic spice. There’s a richness to its depths of textural white orchard fruits, perfectly offset by stimulating acidity and a cooling hint of mint leaf, as inner florals amass toward the close. Wow, there’s so much going on here, and yet this is still so youthfully poised. I can imagine that a few years in the cellar will really bring the Feldmarschall to life. (Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2020)

Mar 1st, 2020Shockingly good. Showed its Riesling genetics with ripping acid and slight petrol notes, but had much sweeter fruit and quite floral.

Feb 7th, 2018The benchmark for the grape. Tiefenbrunner manages to tease a depth out of this grape beyond any examples I've tasted. Fascinating sweet white flower stems, cucumber, exotic white tea, shiso, kiwi, maché and with this overall succulence which speaks of clean-style smaragd Gruner in terms of its overall structural balance. The acid is present, but never verges into punishing and of course, a pleasant quinine-y bitter quality that marks it Italian. Overall like a magic refreshing elixir that they might serve you at alpine resort run by wood elves.

Jul 13th, 2016So much sage on the nose with spice and stone fruits. Dry, slight bitterness that you get with Italian whites and pleasant purity and depth on the palate. Lovely wine.

Jun 7th, 2016A little past its prime, but awesome none the less. Golden hay color and apricots. Textural and vivid. Benchmark muller.
