Tenuta di Carleone
Il Guercio Toscana Sangiovese
The 2021 Il Guercio is 100% Sangiovese from Lamole. Vinification and aging in cement yielded an especially stark but expressive wine that is so distinctive. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender, mint and orange peel are all beautifully lifted. A touch of stems adds aromatic breadth, but they aren’t especially evident. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, July 2024)

Revisiting one of last years true revelations the 2017 Tenuta di Carleone Il Guercio, which at my very first encounter became a new favourit.
Sangiovese in its purest of forms, so vivid, so transparent yet so unique.
A highly defined nose of crushed, fresh but ripe red berries, followed by lavender and a perfumed incense character over a pronounced gravely carpet. Stunning texture on the palate with superfine but ever present tannins and a piercing acidity that carries the fruit through a long finish. A mesmerizing wine where there is a high change of getting lost in the glass. Paired with braised pork shoulder and tomato jus.

One of 2019’s favorite new acquaintances Tenuta di Carleone Il Guercia. Equally impressive today as its displaying a wonderful combination of playfulness, transparancy, gracefulness and intensity. Opening with a vibrant and nuanced red fruit profile followed by a perfumed and herb infused floral note with a salty and gravelly minerality in the back end. It’s developing in layers with the time in the glass reaching unexplored territories in each sniff.
The palate is an act of grace, a wonderful flow and an enticing texture
with very fine yet present tannins that is balancing the fresh acidity as they together carries the complex fruit profile throughout the gravelly encore.
An impressive act worthy standing ovations

I have praised this wine before, but first now with a night alone with this beauty it was time to break it down to pieces, and what a beautiful performance of the 2017 Tenuta Di Carleone Il Guecio, the fruit shows an impeccable and perfectly ripe quality, fresh as a daisy with a defined red fruit and a floral brush. A salty sea breeze and stony character brings complexity in the deep end. With time in the glass another gear is added as the fruit becomes more defined and layered as the wine reach its climax.
The palate is another chapter, where the fine powdery yet very present tannins acts in tune with the fresh acidity in the background, directing the fruit throughout its long finish. It drinks so well in its enchanting primary stage, but it also have so much to give if you look behind its corners. Give it some air and your fullest attention and you’ll be happily rewarded.

Pretty good and was a good pop and pour. Really pretty and had dark red candied fruit and herbs. Lean and maybe better without food.

Oct 1st, 2023Really quite a wine. Beautiful strawberry translucence in the glass. Decanted 1 hour and gave it a bit of a chill. Lots of great lighter red fruit. Very refined tannins and wonderful acid on the finish. Has a bit of a funky note on the end - only way I can describe it is it’s like the juices that come out of a good dry aged steak when it’s resting. So fun to try and perfect with a roast young chicken with mushrooms cooked in the chicken drippings.
