Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia 2013: from Jay. Initial thoughts/impressions from a brief tasting conducted this afternoon. Deep ruby colour. Dark fruits, cedar tobacco box wrapper and brown spice dominate a delightful nose with a hint of torrefaction. The wine has a subtle attack across the palate but then builds across the mid palate. This is not the dense and intense super Tuscan style we have often seen over the last 20 odd years but a more nuanced wine with tannins which, at this stage, are far greater along in their path to integration. There is certainly a feeling of balance here. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot. 94/100. Drink 2020 to 2040.

As wonderful as it was to the the 2013 Ornellaia, I look forward to doing so again in a decade. Super tight, this wine needs time. Polished, intense, dark and elegant, it's delicious now but will only get better.

Welcome to Friday and it looks like a beautiful weekend. The wine today is the 2013 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore. I have been waiting a long time to try an Ornellaia it has lived up to my expectations. This wine is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot.
On the nose is dark fruit, black cherry, plum, blackberry, graphite, violets and spice.
On the palate is a fully integrated wine with black cherry, raspberry, cassis, cedar box, some tobacco, and spice.
There is medium + acidity, silky smooth full body mouth feel with firm intense tannins. The wine rounds out with a long beautiful finish.
I was definitely delighted and not disappointed with this wine.

Smells "classy" with ripe plums, dark berries set amongst some high quality cedar oak and a touch of floral and greenery coming through too. Quite plush on the palate, with the structural components well integrated, it's just about good to go now but will do well in the cellar too. The sort of wine that would appeal to the majority.

Nose: wet forest floor, pencil lead, over-ripe strawberry, ripe cranberry
Palate: confirms the nose + some ripe blackberry, vanilla and cedar from the 9months new french oak to compliment the fruit. Great softly gripping tannin, mod acidity to balance the tannin and alcohol
