1979 Krug. Medium golden hue. Nose is peachy, toffee, slight hint of sherry that blows off fairly quickly into an almost floral bouquet. Intoxicating. The mouthfeel is wonderful - acidity is still roaring but not overpoweringly sour like the 1990 which I found unbalanced in comparison. Deep concentration of flavour - slight nuttiness with air. The finish is mind blowing - a good two minutes and powerful. For me the finish and character of the wine edges the too perfect 1988. One of the greatest champagnes I have had. A legend with still a good amount of time left. Drink now until 2035. — 7 years ago
1979 Clos Du Mesnil. What do you do when you are confronted with a legendary wine? You hope it doesn’t disappoint. At Pages in Paris today, Tomo delighted us with this outstanding bottle. Medium golden hue. The nose was to die for: fresh, white flower, chalk and honeyed - alluring and forever changing in the glass while keeping its freshness. Hints of truffle wafted away within minutes. What seemed like an impossible dream of the ultimate Champagne remained intact. Fine but persistent bubbles, huge but balanced concentration with a refreshing, zesty acidity and a finish I can still taste an hour and a half after having drained the last few precious drops of this legend. Wow, wow, wow. Incredible. 100 points. Don’t be afraid to open now or in 20 years. — 7 years ago
1985 vintage. Medium golden hue. On the nose, some spicy notes and stewed fruits. Deep concentration of aromas workout any obvious oxidation. On the palate, balanced but slightly tired as the stewed dried fruit note comes to the fore. The finish is long but lacks the depth and kick of the 1979. In esteemed company this slightly falls short. On its own it’s a wizz. — 7 years ago
1988 vintage. Medium golden hue. Fresh and primary nose - no oxidation. With air, the fruit becomes more lemon vanilla . On the palate, incredible balance - perfection itself if a little too perfect. Great length. A perfect ‘88. Stunning. Drink now until 2030+ — 7 years ago
