Pelagrilli Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
Poured out garnet, with some purplish hues. Decanted and tasted over two hours. Rich nose of baked black fruits, tobacco, some earthy, dusty characters, and a patina of volatile acidity. Heaps of prune on the palate, though the acidity does provide an impression of fresher sour cherries on the mid-palate. Concentrated and full-bodied, which most on the table commended. Nice tannins that was fine and dusty, at medium-high levels, appearing mostly on the gums (base of teeth). Finished warm, with more maderised fruit, touched by savoury balsamic and meaty notes. Lacking vitality for me, so not a fan - thought it might have been affected by lacklustre storage conditions, but my notes seem consistent with some CT users. Bottle variation has been noted by others.

1 person found it helpfulMay 7th, 2022Tart cherries come together with nuances of dried flowers, citrus and old spice box as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli opens in the glass. It’s silky and round, yet a core of salty minerality creates a savory tension, as bright red berries and inner florals amass toward the close. This finishes lightly structured with tart fruits and a hint of wild herbs. The Pelagrilli comes from the winery’s vineyards in the north, where the higher content of clay adds an attractively plush weight, which, coupled with 24 months in barrique, makes for a wonderfully opulent but balanced wine. 2011 vintage, medium plus tannin, medium acidity, well structure, on the nose secondary aroma is coming out, forest floor, dried violet, can def age longer. Great value too.

Jun 21st, 2017Aromatically closed. This had a riper fruit character, and the aging in French barrique made it richer on the palate. While I think it's good,I'm a much bigger fan of more traditional Brunello. This doesn't have the aromatic complexity that Sangiovese is so famous for.

Oct 27th, 20152010 vintage. Very elegant style, but simply gorgeous. Vibrant fine tuned fruit, and texture that dances!

Sep 12th, 2015Came off more tannic than the Vecchie Vigne, but it is a bit leaner in style. Tremendous focus with haunting aromatics.
