Horseshoe Vineyard Syrah

We were so fortunate to have Jeff Brinkman, Rhys’ winemaker for the past 15 years, join our tasting of nine Rhys Syrahs from 2003 - 2013. Menthol, steamy. Really tough year with late rains

Imagine a great Cote Rotie, Cornas, and a Cal Syrah step into a bar. The atmosphere is all French but the ‘Mercian makes it interesting and overblown with too much density. It was spectacular, but if it were a bit more reserved, and didn’t stain my Riedel, it would have been on another level.

Black cherry, iodine, lavender.

Stylistically reminiscent of Gonon, or Jamet, given whole-cluster character. Lacked a little energy. Great intention.

These guys do Syrah exceedingly well also.

Wow, what a nose of white peeper and lavender. Fruit present on night one, but gave way to some serious tapenade with air.

Taste like toasted oak...not like wine aged in toasted oak, but literally like toasted oak, and very much just that. Not my favorite flavor profile but I can dig it...very unique for what it is. Not for the money th0

Rhys is worth having around. Enough said. 👍🏼
