Podere le Boncie (Giovanna Morganti)
Le Trame Toscana Sangiovese Blend
Splash decanted about 15min prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a couple of hours and with a variety of fare. The 2020 “Le Trame” could by all rights be labeled “Chianti Classico” as the fruit is all sourced from Castelnuovo Berardenga and aged more than an enough prior to release. However, Giovanna chooses to use the IGT designation and honestly, who cares because this is awesome stuff. The wine pours a deep garnet color with medium+ viscosity, moderate staining and some signs of light sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with heady notes of Morello cherry, black tea, licorice, and dry stony earth. There’s definitely some VA too but that eventually blows off with about 30min of air. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. This is already quite the charmer; there is just something about these wines from Podere La Boncie that I find to be so wonderful, so soulful. Drink now with some patience and through 2035.

Aug 6th, 2024The 2021 Le Trame is everything I hoped it would be. Intensely aromatic, silky and deep, with explosive fruit, the 2021 is a rapturously beautiful wine that captures proprietor Giovanna Morgante at her very best. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2021 needs time to be at its most expressive, but its potential is already evident from the very early going. Le Boncie could very well turn out to be Italy's next superstar estate. Readers will want to snap up these wines before that becomes apparent to the public. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, July 2024)

The 2020 Le Trame is fabulous. It's the sort of wine that can be deceptive at first given its mid-weight structure and understated personality. But the intensity of the flavors and the wine's persistence reveal themselves pretty quickly. Cedar, pipe tobacco, dried leaves, mint and blood orange play off a core of red-toned fruit. There's plenty of depth and structure, but all the elements are so well put together that it is easy to look past the wine's more serious side. Readers who can find the 2020 will not want to hesitate. It is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2023)

Lighter side of Sangiovese - fresh, even juicy and bright berry, cranberry. Needed half hr decant to smooth some rough edges but liked this a lot.

No longer classified as a Classico because of Chianti's political needs, this family does an amazing job. This is so juicy and fresh, tannin is easily ignored and soft. Cherry cherry cherry

1 person found it helpfulOct 26th, 2015Lots of funk but it blew off after 20 minutes. Not necessarily dark for a Sangiovese but the body has a notable density, which you wouldn't expect from a traditionally-styled Sangiovese. Seems this muscle likely comes from the Foglia Tondo grape, which is in the mix alongside Coloino (for color), Mammolo (for fragrance), and Canaiolo (to soften.)
