Anthony’s Birthday barbaresco… tastes like that sweet Mojave rain…. Great body, Fantastic length, lots of acidity and aging potential. Great alternative to a Barolo on a great vintage year. Tar. Rose petals. Leather. Quintessentially Nebbiolo, but more approachable.

Winery located in Alba, Piedmont region founded in 1881. Great Grandson, Pio Boffa, continues the tradition of innovative wine making. Ruby with red fruit aromas and herb floral scents. On the palate tart cherry, dried berries, cinnamon, licorice and tobacco notes. Full soft tannins bring fruit to long finish ending with earthy mineral oak. Wonderful, Nebbiolo at its best! Starting to drink now!

Lean, earthy. Tad thin. Not bright.

Pio Cesare’s 2016 Barbaresco is, quite simply, everything Barbaresco should be. Medium in body and translucent, with a firm backbone of youthful Nebbiolo tannin, the 2016 is captivating from the very first taste. Rose petal, lavender, mint, blood orange and red berry fruit open effortlessly. This is textbook Barbaresco. I loved it. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, October 2020)

2011 is in a great spot right now. Opens up immediately to dried roses, leather, incense. Tannins have softened quite a bit.

This is really starting to show its stuff. Wonderfully expressive floral nose. Primary fruit bursting out of the glass after a two hour decant. Leather, cherries, creosote, mint, blood orange. Taught acidity and firm tannins following an almost creamy mouthfeel. Very classic sensibility to this vintage, but with a subtle imprimatur of French oak. I absolutely love great Barbaresco during the 8-10 year stage, and this one is no exception. Class and elegance abound. Lovely wine that I’ll be sure to revisit.
