Magill Estate Shiraz
Final Wine from the Magnum Dinner (from 750 ml on this occasion) from the historic Magill Estate , first planted in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. Only 12 acres. Now enveloped by the suburbs of Adelaide. I tend to only drink Magill Estate in excellent vintages as it lives or dies on a single Vineyard unlike most of the other Penfolds Red Cuvees where they can source fruit from their massive resources throughout South Australia to bolster a poor vintage. Not as oaky or ripe as many other Penfolds reds and the better for it IMO. Plummy earthy minerality with some spice and savoury tannins. Beautifully balanced and the best Magill Estate I’ve ever had.

Jun 5th, 2017Nose of; blackberries, blueberries, plum, black raspberries, violets and soft spices. This 80-90% new oak...2/3 French & 1/3 American. M+ tannins, blueberries, blackberries, black plum, plum, black raspberries, pepper, strong leather, anise, dry crush rocks, mint, tarry notes, red fruits come on the longer finish, tarry notes and a good presence of baking spices. Ripe, round, fruits on a beautifully consistent long finish with very acidity. Photos of some old fortified barrels and a grand display of some very old vintages of; "Hermitage", "Grange" etc. I would love to open and taste but kept under serious lock & key.

Apr 19th, 2017Bright,showing a little brick in the edge. Marvellous apparence! Nose lead by the wood scents, leather, tobacco, spices, coconut, but also surrounded by a good red berry fruit and a fine minerality. Savoury, irony and meaty in flavour too. Eucaliptus, green tea leaves. Beauty!!✈️
