Penfolds
Bin 138 Barossa Shiraz Blend
The first of 4 bottles and no notes taken. I do remember the Grenache in the blend made an impression with its raspberry notes. Barely medium weight overall. Earthy and spicy with a musky note. Drink through the 2020s.

Aug 13th, 2022After the 08' Dom incident. Broke a two months dry streak with this. Not out choice, but by a friend's well-intended but alas ill-fated decision at a restaurant. Arghhh! Another bottle cursed by the weather here. At this point, I think I've become an expert in detecting slightly heat damaged red wines. No matter the variety, the M.O. is the same - fruit aromas that's starting to prune and often accompanied by tobacco notes. Fruit is often present in the palate (fresh even at times), but the wine presents few other notes. Tannins always appear a little harsh, even on typically lighter extract wines. In short, every red wine starts to taste the same. Frustrating.

Jun 20th, 2021Raspberry aromas and a rubbery note. Very raspberry on the palate. Oak influence is restrained, particularly for a Penfolds red (apart from St Henri) although it is 10 years old, very integrated and nearing the end of its drinking window. Once again the Grenache aromas and influence on the palate dominate in this GSM Blend. Easy to drink.

When you are an Aussie based wine lover for over 40 years you end up with a large collection of Penfolds Reds from their vast range and often you have a pre-determined idea of what you are going to get like ripe fruit and mocha oak all expertly handled and destined for the Cellar but this wine is different being a GSM more European in style, softer and more savoury. This is at its peak but will last a few more years. Very moreish.

Apr 13th, 2017Interesting blend of grapes. For those of you not familiar with Mataro, it's another name for Mourvèdre. The Mataro gives it more structure and depth.

Plum, blackberry, black cherry, licorice, vanilla and mint (of course!). Big and round and fruitier on the mouth than nose.
