Mofete Etna Rosso Nerello Mascalese Nerello Cappuccio
A little mean at first, but with air this gets friendlier. Nose develops very floral, delicate red berry fruit, with loads of slightly smoky, flinty cracked stone minerality. Lean and intense, but light in weight. Its flavors definitely highlight bitter minerally notes over fruit. Nice acidity and a long, mineral finish. Demanding on its own, it was really nice with a meat-heavy pizza.
UPDATE: Night 2, the bitterness has receded and been replaced by more fruit. It’s still lean and athletic, but more balanced. That development over the course of 24 hours suggests this will improve over the next few years. Upping score from 9.0 to 9.1.

Much better with food. Moderate tannins, some black fruit, not much standing power. Doesnt compare to the better Etns Rosso’s ive had.

Dec 10th, 2020Rich and acidic. Almost gritty. Blueberries, rasberries. Maybe slightly waxy.

Dec 22nd, 2018Very zippy and to the NYT point, a bit ‘nervous’. Herbal, yes, but woody. A bit mentholy and astringent but interesting...

Oct 8th, 2018Can’t get enough If this grape - big red fruit (ripe raspberry, maybe even some pomegranate) with that fabulous minerality you get from the volcanic ash in the soil. Speaking of which, that facsimile of Mount Etna on the bottle is textured with actual ash from Mount Etna (or so I was told)!
