M. Chapoutier
Barbe Rac Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend
Beautifully evolved cdp. I always prefer this to croix de bois. Lovely ruby color with aromas of red plum, kirsch, fig, anise and baking spices. A little bit of dusty earth as well. On the palate it is suave and not aggressive in the least. I am really beginning to prefer the less ripe and flamboyant vintages like 2011 and 2006. This is a prime example

Mar 19th, 2020Tried this a year ago, still nice! History of Chapoutier family dates back to early 19th century when current owner Michel Chapoutier’s great-, great-, great-grandfather Marius purchased estate & famous l’Hermitage vineyards. Deep Purple (with a little smoke on the water), 100% Grenache with aromas of dark fruit and complex exotic spice. Plum, berry & current flavors with nutty tobacco develops into sweet licorice. Tannins a bit grippy but will soften, lingering, balance ending with fruit and spice. Nice!

Wonderful evening at the City Club courtesy of Jeff’s hosting at the Friday group. Cellar guessing Jeff is a dangerous game as he’s the type who plans to throw curveballs! All wines served blind.
This was insane. Wow! WOTN for me. Dark chocolate, black pepper, dates, burnt graham cracker. So incredibly dense yet balanced! Best CdP I’ve ever had.

Sulfur and campfire. Hugely alcoholic, but shockingly balanced. Seemed much more mature.

Expressive nose of raspberries, red currants and complex soil tones. I would give it just a few more years in the cellar to let the tannins fully integrate.
