In great vintages, second wines from pedigree Chateauxs are always a safe bet, and this is no exception. Pretty open on the nose, indicating its readiness, while hidden tannins and iron/blood-like flavours on the palate suggests waiting is clever, as it’s still one dimensional and needs time to fully express itself.

The 2015 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is dense, powerful and quite juicy, with plenty of black cherry, menthol, licorice and smoke overtones nuances that all build in the glass. Polished and racy to the core, the 2015 is a terrific choice for drinking over the next decade or so. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2018)

Second wine of Pichon Baron. Pretty darn solid - a great effort, I think. On the nose dark cherries, frothy mocha, oaky vanilla, licorice, leather, and blackberries. On the palate, wow...tannins 👀 very pronounced and chewy. Cedar, sawdust, baked plums with baking spices. A little on the austere side at this point in its lifespan but nothing that a little time in the bottle can’t remedy. The perfect selection to break in (not literally, hopefully 🤞🏻) my new Riedel Superleggero Bordeaux Grand Cru stemware.

This comes from the Chateaux Pichon. Formed from their 2nd wines after the premier wine has been bottled. It’s approximately half Cabernet and half merlot, and also made to drink now and for the next 5 years. It’s also a new venture from the winery with oldest bottle being 2015. Big merlot notes at the beginning, followed by the medium bodied tannins and spice from the cab. Overall the flavours aren’t as pronounced or as long lasting as the premier chateaux, but it’s really really good. Bought a bottle (which is affordable) and can’t wait to try it in a couple of years.
