Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese Riesling

First time trying this since buying on release. Nice medium gold color, heavy in the glass like oil. Great nose. Notes of apricot, wet stones, petrol, tan spice and some kiwi. Rich and powerful on the mouth. Acidity comes on with air. This has everything you want in a German Riesling. In a great zone with years if not decades of enjoyment in front of it.

Petrol undertones show first, lovely apricot aromas and flavors, this is still incredibly youthful, this wine will probably outlast me, long, lingering finish, but this really holds at the sweetness level (Spatlese) and isn’t in any way cloying, great juice!!

Unfortunately, this bottle had leaked and had about 1-2 inches of ullage; with that said, moderately-ripe fruit, lovely flavors, but lacks the expected acidity to provide the long finish, good, but a pristine bottle would undoubtedly show much better!!

This is less sweet, and more straightforward, than the 2001 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese we drank recently, this is moderately sweet, nicely balanced, but the separator from the 2001 is the layers of depth and complexity of the 2001, although this is still quite good!!

Only picture of wine that I remembered to take over the last week at Burning Man... but this sure hit the spot in the middle of the Nevada desert 🔥🔥🔥
