I get it, I get it, I understand the hype now. This was the last bottle of the day, the crowd thinned down to 3 from 7 and 15 bottles had already been consumed. The color of the wine was the first hint that let me know this was going to be different. In the glass this looks like water. However once your nose gets into the glass you know this cannot be water. Notes of lime, oranges , herbs and stone fruit blast their way into your nasal passage. You almost feel there’s no need to drink it, just snort it. Everything that your nose was treated to is amplified on the palate. Pure fruit and electrifying acid. I now know what Uma Thurman’s character in Pulp Fiction experienced when John Travolta stabbed her in the heart with a shot of adrenaline.

This has much of the flesh I found lacking in the Altenberg feinherb last week, though I don't find this quite as exciting this vintage as I did the 2012, which was a thrill ride. Here the personality is more relaxed and laid-back. The sweetness level is what you might call "classic auslese" or close to what other producers bottle as spatlese these days. It tastes sweet without tasting thick or treacly, though it's not a wine where the acid is so sharp it hides the sweetness. It is overtly sweet this year. The fruit is pale and relatively light in weight but the flavors are tropical, more pineapple than orchard fruit. It turns drier on the back end as a result of having a chalky or talc-like powdery sensation emerge, which was also in the Altenberg.

More and more, I just adore this producer. I have definitely contracted the Saars virus.
