Giovanni Manzone
Castelletto Barolo Nebbiolo
Lots of complexity and length, with fine tannins, but a bit on the oaky side

Nov 24th, 2022Popped and poured. The 2014 “Castelletto” is garnet with an transparent core and very slight staining of the tears. On the nose, cherry lozenge, roses, dried green herbs, tomato leaf. On the palate, the wine is dry, high tannin, medium++ acid. On the palate, cherry candy, cherry raisin, dried earth and iron minerals. A little thin. Long finish. The nose is more interesting than the palate at this stage. I gotta wonder if time will be kind to the 2014 vintage? Anyway, fun to check in on.

Jun 17th, 2022The whole damned rose bush. That’s what this smelled like. I’ve never smelled roses so prominently in a Barolo before. Of course, there were dark and red fruit, dried herbs and tar and other wonderful things but the roses played the starring role for sure. This is in a gorgeous place right now but it certainly has the structure for many, many years to come.

1 person found it helpfulAug 3rd, 2019The more that I drink the wines from Giovanni Manzone, the more I'm impressed by their quality. This bottle was open for business right away. Dark fruit, pomegranate, tar, tobacco, rose bushes. I detected a touch of VA but nothing at all off-putting. Lovely stuff that would pair well with a range of fare. The tannins are still quite firm at this stage but I wouldn't hesitate to drink now if you wanted/needed a Barolo to deliver the goods. That being said, these will drink well for another decade...possibly more.

Jul 26th, 2016Much brighter nose than I expected. Plums and cherries with an herbaceous backbone. A hint of leather as well.
