Giaconda
Estate Vineyard Chardonnay
At my 2015 Chardonnay Challenge the Giaconda was a consensus 3rd. Easily the most smoky, sulphidic, struck match of the 6 wines. I loved it. On the palate a powerful wine. Opulent. This wine is becoming difficult to source and sells out in a flash upon release.

Sep 8th, 2024Funky, very sulphidic and smoky - very struck match …. but it works with nectarine notes. As I said in the previous note, Is this the best Chardonnay in Australia? Becoming hard to get when I bought a few bottles of the latest vintage a week ago. Like a quality Premier or Grand Cru white Burgundy. A medium bodied palate but the palate intensity is profound - off the charts. Soon I will have a blind tasting of 2015 Chardonnays with friends and include some Burgundies with wines like this, Leeuwin Estate, Heytesbury and Yattarna.

Jun 18th, 2021Pale Lemon in colour. Smoky sulphidic notes - struck match to the max - like a burnt matchbox factory. A totally different story on the beautiful medium + bodied palate verging on opulent. A sweetish peachy palate - downright delicious. Some good judges say this is the best Chardonnay in Australia. If not, definitely in the top 3. Wonderful with fresh oysters.

Aug 30th, 2020Simple perfect. Ripe stone & orchard fruits, well judged oak and Smokey reductive notes. Still one of the best new world example of Chardonnay in that pleasant savory style.

Jun 4th, 2018Leesy, nutty and slightly oxidized, giving it a distinct non-New World feel. Really nice wine!

Jan 18th, 2015Such an amazing chardonnay! Medium straw color; wild aromas of sagebrush, dried citrus peel and stones, persistent and true, decidedly distinctive; medium bodied, tight and well built on the palate, lengthy and lasting; dry, excellent acidity, great balance; wild and crazy flavors beyond what most folks are used to, brazenly stoney, with a bitter citrus peel in the flavors; long finish, tightly would and impactful in the aftetaste. (Best Served: 2014-2020) One of the world's greatest Chardonnays! [Sourcing: Beechworth] [Winemaking Highlights: 100% barrel fermented (approximately 30% new French oak), 100% malolactic fermentation]; aged 22 months] #chardonnay #australia #giaconda #whitewine
