1997 vintage. From a 375ml bottle. Banging and unrepentant. Not going anywhere it doesn’t want to. Plenty of grip/structure along with slightly more fruit than expected. Fantastic. 3.3.23.

1997 Gaja Sperss.
Powerful Barolo yet with elegance and finesse.. Could still develop for another ten years-- tannins still a little grippy but mostly softened. The tannins and high acidity carry intense primary black fruit (blackberry, black currant) floral (lavender) herbal (eucalyptus, dried herbs) and secondary oak that is well integrated but still notable (Clove, smoke, charred wood) and tertiary of cooked cherry, earth, forest floor, coffee, black tea and a little chocolate. Long intense Finish

Drinking quite well, though definitely needs a proper decant. Would have liked a bit more Nebbiolo tar and such but this is deep and earthy with a ton of fruit and structure.

Unfortunately just not there. Great aromatics and color, but even after a good hour plus of decanting the fruit simply didn’t show up. Possible storage conditions are to blame, but this was quite disappointing for a big steakhouse dinner.

Fantastic wine. After one hour of decanting this wine took off. Incredible nose...incredible palate. This wine will last another 15 years.
