Nossa Calcario Bairrada Baga

If one Portuguese varietal grabs me it’s Baga, & this bottling is one of the higher end bottlings I’ve tried. It’s early in its development so demands decanting and/or aging, but the stuffing is all there. Ripe red cherries, medium light body, some Burgundy adjacent analogies I’m sure.

Made in the village of Ois do Bairro, aged in French oak, aromas of pronounced black fruits with some spice and herbs. On the palate flavors of black plum, black cherry and blackberry with a stewed fruit character, adding in some pepper, vanilla and toasty notes. Aggressive firm chewy tannins that pack a punch with acidity to match, medium finish ending with oaky tones. Nice, Tasting Sample.

Lovely minerality and freshness. Great food wine. Balanced.

First time I actually like a Portuguese wine. A ton of a Brett. Yet also red fruit. Cherry. Dark. Grown on limestone. 100 year old vines.

Perhaps I had an atypical bottle. But this was harsh and actually unpleasant. For $35, not a good experience. The last few ounces went to the cellar for red wine vinegar. 

Huge tropical nose and finish timorasso/romo like minerals tough age/wood maybe? Could be taint but was tops

This is cool stuff. Very mineral as the name says, pure, medium bodied, balanced, very very elegant. Requires time in the cellar. Top notch portuguese.
