Ferrando Vini
La Torrazza Brut Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante

Blind reaction:
“I like it a lot, tastes like it’s from serious soils.” When Abe’s first remarks are about the soil, you can be sure the wine is a winner.
The inside scoop:
From a house famed for its Nebbiolo, Luigi Ferrando vinifies the region’s indigenous white grape – Erbaluce di Caluso – in the Champagne tradition. Precision, complexity and tradition all come through. With less than 200 cases made per year, this wine is both regal and rare.

This bottle showed lots of advanced aging. Much more oxidative than I recall.

I seriously dig it. Smells like salumi. Super savory on the palate. Unlike anything I've had.

2009 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante "La Torrazza" - first time I've ever had the Erbaluce grape and this wine. - Dry, medium (-) body and acid, creamy carbonated bitter texture with unbalanced salinity and mineral components. Felt like a watered down "soda machine carbonated" apple martini. I dunno know... Despite some good recommendations... I still can't embrace it for $37 bucks a bottle. Not my jam.

We had a blast tasting sparkling wines from off then beaten path with @Abe Schoener. There's not a lot of this one brought into the U.S. every vintage but that shouldn't stop you from getting to know the Alpine varietal of Erbaluce.

A sparkler made from the Erbaluce grape native to the Piedmont. A bit of yeast on the nose. Citrus, toast and acid on the palate. Austere but focused. A nice aperitif and interesting experience but not a great fan.
