From Tuscany’s Val d’Arno di Sopra, in the hills east of the Chianti Classico region. This is very friendly and pure tasting. Nose has gorgeously pure, ripe Sangiovese scents of dark cherry, along with some gentle spice and minerally gravel scents. Focused and concentrated fruit in the mouth, forceful but soft and balanced. Not a great deal of complexity, but lots of flavor and purity.

See notes from 33 weeks ago. Still the same. Lacking fruit density on the middle palate. Sangiovese is prominent in the blend. Finishes with firm dry tannins and some astringency. As I said last time - Nothing to write home about. Drank the 3rd and final bottle 52 weeks later on 28th September 2024. There was another Delectable note 85 weeks ago. Not a wine I was particularly thrilled with. This 3rd tasting showed a little better. 90 points. Still needs more mid palate fruit which it won’t get with cellaring.

Mid to dark crimson in colour. Aromatics of dried cherry - quite savoury. These notes carry through to the medium weight palate finishing with some bitterness and astringency. 80%Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Merlot designed to soften that under ripe Sangiovese fruit - doesn’t quite do the job. This wine needs food like a strong cheese. Nothing to write home about.

Nose has dried blackberry, ripe blackberry, dried black currant, old leather, roses, dry potting soil and cut strawberry.

Palate has ripe blackberry, black cherry, cigar, dried cherry, dark chocolate powder with a long finish. Fine tannins still make themselves known, noting the potential of longevity. Exceptional.

Our last bottle on this vintage, it had been a good run, but quite likely this bottle will continue to evolve thru 2024+. 100% Sangiovese.

Pulled the cork, 6h of breathing, then 90m of decant before dinner. Paired to a slowly cooked Bolognese sauce, as expected they worked well. It was a cool and breezy day today, highs in the low 60's (F). The end of May is going out like early May came in, chilly. We got back into the 40's last night, but at least no snow like the first weekend!

Beautiful Sangiovese (with som Merlot). Elegant and refined, very pure and in a sense “naked”. Way less extravagant and extracted than previous vintages. I like it a lot! Tuscany needs more versions like this.

A lovely version of this great Q/P ratio Tuscan blend. Drinking well already and if you can source it at a good price, get a case a follow its evolution over the next 4-6 years.

Terrific dinner at the National Arts Club on Gramercy Park Square with some new friends. Having enjoyed Petrolo's top wine yesterday, I decided to stay with the same producer today and so I brought along their entry level wine, but from 2000 so there was a fair bit of age to it. Quite advanced with mostly tertiary notes but retaining vibrancy, it showed really well. Peak drinking.
