2017 Riesling and Pinot Gris - both wines are built for the cellar but offering plenty of enjoyment now.

What a phenomenal wine is this 2017 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling from the lieu-dit Clos Windsbuhl, tasted for the second time having first tried in 2019. Honey, orange marmalade, blood orange, hazelnut, burnt butter and a distinct smokey character grace the nose, with a touch of sea breeze alongside a very creamy note - v complex overall.

The palate is totally unique, quite full bodied, with bitter orange, pink grapefruit, zesty yet an incredibly supple texture with chalky minerality. High acidity, sure, but really quite an elegant mouthfeel that leads to a reasonably long finish. Incredibly drinkable.

Peaches, white flowers, apricot. Tangy edges. Viscous with good acidity. Excellent

Annoyingly seem to have lost my notes on this. But this was everything I expected and more from this Riesling: bracingly acidic, juicy, long, beautiful. Excited to see how it ages.

M+ intensity. Peaches and ripe apricot. M+ acid, m body, long finish. Classic with lots of layers.

How time is so important to taste the greatness of the Zind Humbrecht, and limestone & riesling

A hard vintage for Alsace this wine is more about finesse and elegance while being racy and expressive - developing a great complexity and imprinted by the special terroir of this Clos existing since the 14th century - the vines are about 40 years old

So much going on. Golden yellow hue, carmelized brandied pear and roasted chestnut nose, followed by an apple cider, honeyed floral taste. Thankfully, some bright acidity puts a smile on my face.

Syrupy sweet. A bit unbalanced for me.
