White pepper, citrus rind, pineapple, wildflower honey on the nose. Palate concentration is very good with good acid and minerality. Almost great. Still, to my palate this succumbs to the ripeness of the vintage on the finish… a little cloying.

2013. St Joseph Blanc. 100% Roussanne? (I have to check). A gift from a friend of this rare bottling that rarely leaves the Ardeche. Floral and stone fruited, but not unctuous. Delicate on the palate. So much lift and freshness. Beautiful.

The way to my heart is wonderfully unusual aromas. Here are some - think smokey pineapple and buttered popcorn and maybe stewed apples in simple syrup. No doubt Rhône, this is full bodied and powerful, but not at all sloppy - oak and spice, lean and clean.
