soft red cherry. Really pretty roses petal edges. A whiff of Iodene and gorgeous lifted stuff. Really lovely and long. Subtle

Very savory and intense. Deep gravelly fruit. Plum, dark chocolate, dried herbs. Brooding and very pure. Excellent but young

Initially pretty muted before a sufficient decant allows the sister’s magic touch to slowly be revealed. When it finally does come around, it shows superb delineation, balance, detail and finally does unfurl a wondrous bouquet. Fresh red and black fruit, exotic spice, and a touch of saline on the energized and mineral infused finish.

It shows good verve and signature MG elegance and purity. There is plenty of depth but what’s missing is the length and persistence you expect from this wine. In hindsight a pre-dinner decant would have served well, because the last pour was the best. Nonetheless, more time will allow for the palate to come around.

The 2018 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an intense bouquet of black fruit with veins of blueberry, infused with crushed rock and rose petal. Full of tension, this is classic Ruchottes. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, and lightly spiced, displaying an unerring sense of symmetry toward the saline finish. It needs bottle age to fully knit together, and whether it will surpass the 2019 we will have to see. Still, this is a superb Ruchottes that will evolve over 20–30 years. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2020)

Brownish tawny. Notes of cherries, spice, mushrooms, dark earth and a little kirsch that developed over the night. In the mouth the fruit is faded but there is still a nice structure to it. Declined in performance over the night. I gave the last bottle too much airtime before tackling it. This was enjoyable right away with a pop, decant and pour.

No. 8 in the 9 wine Gevrey Chambertin Grand Cru bracket tasted blind. Candied red fruits on nose and palate. The palate of Medium plus to Profound intensity. Not as impressive as most of the others in this bracket. This domaine is owned by 3 sisters and has developed somewhat of a cult following. Ruchottes being slightly higher up the slope than most of the other Grand Crus they might have suffered more frost damage.

Bright, dark red: lovely Pinot color. Deep, highly nuanced nose combines raspberry, mocha, flinty minerality and complex soil tones. Plush, sexy and sweet but with a serious edge of acidity framing its intense strawberry, red raspberry, mineral and spice flavors. This compellingly chewy, full yet juicy wine finishes rich and very long, with serious late-arriving tannins and lingering perfume. (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017)
