Meursault-Perrières 1er Cru Chardonnay

gorgeous soft lemon oil and chalkiness. Quite intense and with a real minerality and white pepper. Very pretty fruit but quite angular and will develop a long way from here.

I may catch some flak here, but I feel Chardonnay always takes a backseat in the presence of Riesling. Sure they both produce vin de terrior, but the acid and minerality in Riesling completely numbs ones senses to Chardonnay’s, making the latter look flabby even. Such was the case here. The 09’ Lafon Perrières was very good, just a little fat after an onslaught of Rieslings. Buttery, nutty, concentrated, and ripe (stone fruits). An undeniably Baroque wine! But that’s not to say there wasn’t any elegance as it was quite mineral with an iodine-like quality infused in the nose and stoney backend on the palate. It also had an elegant register of minty aroma and to me, sufficient acidity especially considering the vintage. Really excellent quality and was exceptional with cheese, but not a wine I could drink much of during the night.

NB: Surprisingly, not an ounce of premox which SC noted as typical across all the 09’ Lafon’s he’s had this year. Interestingly, oxidative notes were quick to develop the day after.

A touch of butterscotch on the nose with lemon and tangy acidity. Good acid. Mature. In a good place.

Quite dense, full, firm and carries the age well with lightness and elegance now as it feels like the reduction and oak are just a memory.

Tour d’Argent. Deep golden color, like motor oil in the glass. Darker than the 90 Raveneau next to it. Notes of apricot, oranges, wet stones and cardamom spice. Rich, fat and opulent in the mouth. Thought it was tired at first but it powered up with air. Gave that fine grained acidity after several hours of air. At peak or just past, but very memorable.

2000 Lafon Meursault Perriéres very good, more sinewy youthfulness, firm and juicy but with some richness. In a lovely place

wow, this is on fire: chalky and cakey, cereal dust, rocks, lemons, flinty reduction, pure, gorgeous and youthful.

1989 Lafon Meursault Perriéres
stunning, fresh and bright, juicy, mint and citrus, rocky and firm cut. Flinty
Picks up weight in the glass.

Funky and delightful. Wide, deep and rich, toasty wood still coming through, lemon salt, dill aromatics. Honeyed wheat and lemon curd flavors. Quite enjoyable.

Spectacular. Yes, a bit of oxidation but just the perfect amount. Held up beautifully for over three hours.
