Awkward but with signs of greatness shining through. Couldn’t pinpoint exactly a flaw, just not in harmony, but the pieces were there. Red cherry, strawberry, oaky vanilla tannins and graphite. Maybe it was the superior ‘90 at its side?

I have four of these and thought I would do my 10 years in bottle check in. I will tell you this wine has the makings of something special but, it is far from ready. Its showing some Margaux beauty & style but, it needs at least another 7-10 years before I’d open another. The wine has not softened and integrated enough at this stage.

The nose reveals ripe, baked and candied fruits of, dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, strawberries & plum. Big vanilla, clove, cinnamon stick and nutmeg, sweet tarriness, anise, dark, rich turned earth, dry stones, dark berry cola, dry herbs, dry stem, tobacco, graphite, cedar with fresh, dark, red, blue, purple perfumed florals.

The body is big, full and rich. The tannins are dark, round but, meaty and sticky. The structure and tension are still huge. The length is really good but, the balance is still earth dominate. Ripe, baked and candied fruits of, dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, strawberries & plum. Big vanilla, clove, cinnamon stick and nutmeg, sweet tarriness, dark spice with some heat, dark chocolate, mocha powder, used expresso grounds, anise, dark, rich turned earth, dry stones, dry clay, gritty volcanic minerals, leathery, dark berry cola, dry herbs, dry stem, tobacco, graphite, cedar with fresh, dark, red, blue, purple perfumed florals. The acidity is round and beautiful. The finish still needs time but is nice and persists minutes.

92 now with room for 2-3 additional points in 10 plus years.

If you are the type to long cellar your wines, buy the hell out of the 2018 Rauzan-Segla.

The 2012 Rauzan-Ségla has a similar colour to the 2015 although it has a hard time competing with the delineation, the crystalline nature of the 2015. Yet it compensates with the sheer aromatic flamboyance. This has really opened up in the last 18 months or so, quite lush and precocious black fruit, loam and iris, just a slight hint of bell pepper emanating from the small amount of Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. There is a lovely seam of acidity here that lends the 2012 a sense of focus. It is not a deep or lavish Rauzan-Ségla, in some ways a little more conservative than I recall. There is fine grip on the saline finish, perhaps a Margaux that is just beginning to close up for a while? This still has great potential. Tasted at the Rauzan-Ségla vertical at the château. This is the first one that’s a little tight and more weighty. This will take time to balance, interstate and flush out. It has nice dark cherries, blackberries, good presence of baking spices, dark, dry earth. Nice acidity and finish. But, this needs cellaring.

Drank 1/18/19 at the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux event in Miami.  All wines from the 2016 Vintage.

Tasting pour, no formal notes taken.  Most of these wines are very tight, and will require 5-15 years to really come together.  Many will likely improve a few points with time.

My favorite Margaux of the night, and one of the best wines poured in my opinion. Loads of dark fruit, with lots of complexity. A very pleasant surprise.
