The 2015 Pichon-Baron
has an engaging, complex bouquet of blackberry, cedar, mint and graphite, demonstrating more cohesion and more conviction than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and extremely well-judged acidity that imbues
this Pauillac with a sense of effortlessness and class lacking in some of its peers. A stunning 2015 and one of the greatest releases from the estate. Tasted
blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2019)

Visiting again this splendid Paulliac from the 2011 vintage. 2011 vintage was labeled as mediocre in Bordeaux and this lovely wine showed that it is actually a classic vintage with some great wines, so trust the chateau not only the vintage. The nose is tempting with notes if coffee, earth, oak, cassis, black fruits and hints of chocolate, the body is full with round tannins, acidity is splendid and finish is long. My score 92, drink to 2026, perhaps longer

Monthly WTF guys blind tasting group. This month was our annual, and famed, Left Bank vs Right Bank theme. All wines served blind as usual. Started off with a Rosé and a champagne. Great night.

This was one of my favorites of the night. One of the best young Bordeaux’s I’ve tasted. Ripe and modern nose (fruit forward) with smoked meat and baked blackberry pie. The palate revealed cocoa/dark chocolate, baking spices and a hint of blue fruit wrapped by black fruit. Big. Will obviously get better, but was shocked how good this was now. I called this ‘12-14 Left Bank.

Whoa, this is rock solid. Tons of time left but after a two hour decant it was sublime.

Truly one of the better 2000’s I’ve had. Needs an hour or more to open up but glorious fruit and texture once it does. Silky like cashmere. Black fruits galore. Better to hold your bottles for another five years. The best is yet to come.

The 2016 Château Pichon Baron is drop-dead stunning and one of the most compelling and complete wines from the vintage. Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, this begins with wonderfully complex aromatics of ripe dark currants, sweet exotic spices, roasted coffee grounds, fresh florals, graphite and hints of loam which all come together seamlessly in the glass. On the palate this follows through and continues to thoroughly impress with its full body and beautifully polished, yet supportive tannins and a deep core of ripe fruit. It demonstrates remarkable depth and concentration along with outstanding balance and finesse leading up to the long, graceful finish. This wine has it all and while it is already quite fascinating in its youth it is ultimately built for the long term. This is an epic vintage for Pichon Baron, and could eventually go down as one the greatest wines ever from this legendary Château.

The nose reveals, perfume floral, dark, ripe cassis. Ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, black plum, plum, strawberry flesh, sweet tarriness, black licorice, steeped, dark, fruit tea, limestone minerals, dry stone, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, dark spice, rich, moist dark soil, just a hint of herbaceous notes, mint, leather, fresh tobacco, graphite, dark berry cola, fresh, dark red, blue and purple florals with violets.

The body is; rich, lush, gorgeous, sexy, and full. The tannins are; round, velvety, still a little firm and sticky with tarriness. The structure, tension, length and balance are just hitting harmony. Ripe; blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, black plum, blueberries, plum, strawberry flesh, sweet tarriness, black licorice, steeped, dark, fruit tea, limestone minerals, dry stone, wet clay, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla, dark spice with heat, rich, moist dark soil, dry crushed rocks, just a hint of herbaceous notes; mint, bay leaf, thyme, leather, expresso roast grounds, cigar with ash, graphite, dark berry cola, fresh, dark red, blue and purple florals, lavender with violets. The acidity is a fresh water stream. The finish is unbelievably; elegant, well balanced & polished, lush, rich, ruby, gorgeously sexy and lasts minutes.

Warm, ripe Bordeaux’s vintage with roughly two decades of good drinking ahead of it.

Photos of, my favorite Chateau in Bordeaux, their newer barrel room that sits under the bottom photo, field hands harvesting their Estate fruit and the outer building that is their barrel room.

Delicious yet still young and tight, needs more time to mature and open up. Lots of chocolate, coffee, black fruits, cedar wood, earth, full body, bold tannins, nice fruit, lovely acidity and a long delicious finish. My score 92, drink to 2035

Drank 1/18/19 at the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux event in Miami.  All wines from the 2016 Vintage.

Tasting pour, no formal notes taken.  Most of these wines are very tight, and will require 5-15 years to really come together.  Many will likely improve a few points with time.

Delicious dark fruit, but I preferred the Pichon Lalande. A stunning wine nonetheless. Will age many years.
