Sipping Fine Wine

In 1826, Hugh Barton, already owner of Chateau Langoa (1821) purchased part of Leoville estate, then became known as Léoville Barton. 6 generations of Bartons continue making wine for this 1855 classified 2nd Growth. A blend of 83% Cab Sauv, 15% Merlot, 2% Cab Franc. Deep red with aromas of ripe red berry fruits with hints of licorice notes. On the palate blackberry & rasberry with sweet earthy oak and floral spice tones. Fine tannins, lingering with mineral ending. Almost ready, this fine wine can be sipped young, wait a year or 2.

Friday night and I had a taste for a Bordeaux, so I stopped on my way home and picked up the 2014 Château Léoville Barton from Saint-Julien. A beautiful expression of a classical Left Bank Bordeaux Blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc.

The nose reveals beautiful dark fruit of black raspberry, black cherry, black plum, black currant, a touch of strawberry, graphite, mocha, vanilla, clove and an earthy component.

On the palate you have sweet dark fruit that is beautifully rounded that continues through with black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, plum, licorice, a herbal note and some rich earth.

The wine is medium to full bodied with a racey medium + acidity and medium + chewy tannins that leads right into a long fruit filled finish. A nice wine that has a lot of years ahead of it if you would like to cellar this gem. Now this is definitely how I like to start my weekend off right. Have a safe an enjoyable weekend. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Annual birthday WWC hosting. As normal, 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert, all presented blind.

Fun to do a side by side with the ‘88, and also check in against the Montelena. Profile wise, this leans ripe and modern stylistically. There is a kiss of brett that takes you to Bordeaux but it’s mostly red and black fruit driven with a vanilla pipe tobacco sweetness, leather, cassis and a little bit of a floral note, especially aromatically. Big structure for the vintage, but open for business now if you can give it a few hours in the decanter.

Blue fruits shine with dark cassis and dark chocolate. Finishes with dark and mid red fruits.

2014 vintage. Light-medium body. Excellent cedar and tobacco notes floating amidst the soft tannin treatment. Verry harmonious currently. Maybe 2-3 years more before hitting the absolute top of the bell curve. Maybe. This vintage is rocking right now and arguably at its absolute zenith. So good. 8.8.24.

Wow, showed stunningly already. Lovely black and blue fruited boquet, with soft herbs. Fantastic acidity, lovely density mirroring the nose. Soft tannin on the supple finish. Drinking very well if fairly primary right now.

Dark berry everything, licorice, and earthy aromas. Nice body and smooth as can be. You won’t be disappointed with this very nice Bordeaux from St. Julien. Glad I have a few more bottles to let age.

Leather, vanilla, cheese rinds, and petrichor notes. Opaque colour with a little bit of sediment on the appearance. Tannins has softened to a nice velvety texture on the palate. Tasted a half bottle so it probably aged a bit faster than a standard.

Open for several hours. Plum, blackberry, forest floor, dried leaves.. classic Bordeaux nose. Fresh, juicy, young. Leather notes. Tannins are relatively soft, and juicy dark fruit sings on the finish.
