The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is a dense, powerful wine. Next to the straight Riserva, the Poggiale has more mid-palate depth and overall richness, but it is not more complex or nuanced, just a bigger wine. Red cherry jam, leather, smoke, sweet oak and licorice meld into the unctuous finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2019)

Sipping Fine Wine

Ruby, a blend of 90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Ciliegiolo grown in the Il Poggiale vineyard, and spent 18 months in French (1 year old). Red fruit aromas and floral spice. On the palate cherry and raspberry with notes of sweet earthy spice. Fine tannins on a medium+ finish, good balance with acidity yielding to a fresh ending with a zing of spice. Nice!

Loved this. So aromatic of freshly picked tart cherry and wet soil. Fruity but with a terroir backbone. Medium plus tannin but enough acid to keep you gulping. Chewy raspberry candy and a bit of light wood. Some bitter chocolate and pepper. Really dug this. Better within the six hour mark then next day.

Tastes "classic" but with 22 months French Oak. I'd say Modern-Classic. No vegetal leafiness. Round but not extracted. Well made and surprisingly refreshing for the 14.5abv. 2012

Same purity and finesse as the Chianti Classico with more earth, spice, and leathery tobacco tones. Love that they can convey such weight out of the Sangioveto without covering the wine with new oak makeup. Superb.
