Wow. Stunner. Thick raspberry and rose perfume, with some tar and burnt rubber. Totally transparent but very ripe.

Super forward and aromatic. Wow. Gorgeously ripe mid to late season cherries, florals and almost a hint of compote. Under all that is spice, tar and superb minerality. Really wide and complex nose. Expansive and inviting. Just so pretty. Sot really knows what’s up. Awesome palate. Shows all the glory of what a successful 17 is. Great sweet fruit. Strawberry and mid season cherry. Awesome freshness from acidity and minerality. Toothsome and ripe tannins. Amazing levels of fruit and really profound freshness. This opens rapidly in the glass and develops just mesmerizing aromas. Hints of ripe citrus rind and exotic spices. Really round and well balanced. Shows what a great winemaker Maurizio Sot is. Long, persistent finish. I’d wait 3-4 years for the tannins to come into balance but a very very fine 17. Nose really comes into action after 15 minutes or so. So complex and just so much fruit, tar and spice. Just a brilliant wine! Now after 45 minutes or so the finesse has arrived. Wonderful wine!

Sep 11th, 2021Maurizio Sòt is a superstar. This is a rockstar wine. Nose is so unique and aromatic. Red cherries, herbs, sweet roses, sweeter darker cherries, amazing perfume. The brilliance of 2016 Barolo at the village level is not talked about enough. Glorious spice after 15-18 minutes now. Just glorious. Oh the palate. Sweet and decadent and precise with super sappiness on the finish. Gorgeous red fruits, strawberry, even a hint of red delicious apple, and so many cherries. Amazing precision and depth. Big tannins ensure a long life. Classically structured. Excellent length and persistence.

Jul 3rd, 2021Killer nose and killer color. Gorgeous nose, spice, orange rind, roses, so precise and linear. Cherry flower, licorice. Like a Seurat painting. So detailed and complex. Precise and perfumed. Palate is fresh and incredibly energetic. Gorgeous. Wow. What freshness and energy. So clean. Big medium cherry fruit and unreal precision. Really well made. Palate has a lovely bit of opulence. Awesome tannins and length. This is such high level winemaking. This is like almost Germanic in its precision. Great inner mouth aromas. Really elegant. This is great. 9.3 for now, but I see this going to 9.4 with air.

Opened last night. Musty. Unbalanced. Wife’s comment: smells like moldy Barolo. Into fridge overnight. Huge transformation. Wife’s comment: is this the same wine we had last night? This is delicious. It is. It’s a cliche to say that a Barolo needs 5 more years, but this still young Barolo has huge potential to deliver given time. My other bottles will rest peacefully in the cellar till 2027.
