This wine is very dark. It looks that way and it smells that way, too. The nose offers a funky, earthy, dare I say barnyard-y package of aromas. The fruit that is there, the blackberry, currant, and black plum, is muted and dwarfed by the savory smells. Tar, creosote, forest floor, and cigars are the main event. The palate bears much more fruit. Flavors of dark berry, black currant, plum, black cherry, elderberry and black Mission fig all vie for attention. The mouthfeel is fairly elegant, which is surprising after the brute force of the nose. Fine tannins and a gentle acidity will make a nice pairing with meatballs in a Bolognese sauce or sautéed mushrooms.

I haven't had a Cesanese in like... 15 years.

Inky. Dark fruit. Plenty of earthiness.

A great representation of the style. Ripe raspberry and spice, soft acidity and medium tannins. Highly drinkable.

Great cesanese. If cesanese can be considered as such.

Had never heard of the Cesanese grape and what a nice surprise! Dark ripe fruits, blackberries, ripe plum, cloves and grippy tannins. This is an excellent wine with za’atar lemon bbq chicken.

Balanced, versatile food wine. Paired with a rosemary-heavy Roman chickpea/tomato stew. I always forget how dark this variety can be given how light bodied the wine is (onions took on a deep magenta/purple color during deglazing), making it basically the inverse of Nebbiolo. A rustic, guilty pleasure sort of wine (adored by popes and pornstars per Ian D’Agata’s notes): red vines and flat cherry coke (aka ripe cherries, raspberries, bruised Macintosh apple, vanilla, baking spices) and a hint of earth.
