Ca' Rozzeria
Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend
Year in, year out, this private label (which, the last several years, bottles wine made by Casa Emma), is a terrific value in a high-performing weekday wine. This new iteration is dark-colored, and sports a nose of raspberry coulis, dark florals, a bit of gravel, and vanilla. In the mouth, it’s dry and has pretty good flavor concentration, with good acids and still some youthfully vigorous tannin to shed. Medium-length finish. Probably better in a year or so, but nice now too.

Nov 30th, 2022This is a ridiculous value and I am kicking myself I didn’t get more. This should have been a case purchase, and I never buy a case of anything. The nose has dense — and I mean dense—vibrant raspberry/cherry fruit, so pure, along with spice and dark liquid minerals. The fruit concentration in the mouth is terrific, with very nice acids and a just enough tannin to contain the fruit with some nice structure. Lengthy, pure, clingy finish. So good. I am dead serious about this 9.4.

Mar 29th, 2022Unlike prior iterations of this “secret” private label for Garagiste, the cork had no identifying marks denoting the estate from which it came. (I think the 16 sported a Casa Emma cork, if memory serves.) But regardless who made this, it’s really good. Dark ruby color. Great nose of violets, deeply intense dark cherry, some crushed gravel, and a slight balsamic note. Intense in the mouth, it’s lots of fruit and florals at first, but then gives way to loads of cooling crushed stone minerality, and ends quite savory. Good acids, and lots of soft tannin. Will improve for at least a couple more years, maybe more.

Jul 12th, 2021Garagiste selection. $19.96. Tannins smoothed out over 1-2 hours. Excellent value.
