I've been so impressed with Gerhard Pittnauer, who is probably the best represented producer in my Delectable feed do far. Not because I drink his wines all the time but because they always seem to surprise me. My "rating" for the Heideboden Zweigelt may have looked stingy because I didn't get around to writing a note about how much I liked it. It was there again: earthy, floral, tannin and acid, sweet fruit and bitter herbs - that great tension in flavour and structure that these wines have, allied to a beautiful, silky drinkability. The Pinot may not stack up on the complexity front, but it's got so many pluses. That silkiness, notable from the moment it goes in your mouth and the way the layers of flavour roll through. Not particularly long on the finish but what precedes it is an inviting nose of red fruit - soft ripe red cherry and strawberry - snapped twigs and smoke, a touch of cream (it stays with the fruit throughout, like a dollop of fresh custard on top of cherry pie) and what struck me as a caramelised apple note (again, pleasant and persistent). But then that softness on the palate, which has plenty of body and moderate intensity of flavour. Fresh acidity leaves the end a surprising crispness, and the extract gives a chewiness too. So it's not so much drive on the finish a short-lived vestige of all those attributes. In terms of balance, it's kind of like a push-me/pull-me tension that, rather than being awkward, is easy to succumb to.

Pale ruby/garnet, brick-coloured rim. Nose of strawberry jam, stewed cherry, turron and a boot polish note. Medium bodied, smooth palate with moderate intensity, flavours of those same slightly stewed fruits and spice, a bit smoky too. Enough sweetness and acidity give it a surprising, pleasant, spindly length.

Fresh, juicy, light - slightly herby, slightly vegetal with fresh blue fruit. but all packaged into a frame hat combines lightness with good grip. Nice acidity, too. Reminded me of Jura PN. Slight burn in the finish, but drinking very nicely indeed.

Surprisingly good Austrian Pinot. Recommended by my local offey. Felt very slightly Asti to drink, reminiscent of Barbera.
