Did not know Vega Sicilia made a Toro! This is brooding and dark but unexpectedly lithe and refreshing too. The iron, tar and stone are shot through with fresh berries and mocha. Would be excellent with any smoked, spice rubbed meat

Vega Sicilia started purchasing Toro vineyards in 1997 but didn’t release Pintia until ‘01 after perfecting their style. 100% Tinta de Toro, thick-skinned clone of Tempranillo, beautiful color, complex aromas of fruit & floral spice. Aged, 18 months, French & American oak. On the palate pronounced fresh dark berry fruit flavors, smoky oak notes, well balanced with acidity. Complex tannins, long finish ending with elegant fruit finesse & touch of earthy tones. Nice!

Back at Palma Real Reserve and another Pintia (‘10 this time). Better than the ‘12 last year, exotic nose leading a rich and full-bodied beast. Black cherry and Asian spice, smooth and loaded with fine tannins. Would score higher but started to fall apart somewhat after an hour - i’d PnP this if I owned it. But could be a storage issue...

Full. Black fruit. Well structured. Terrific with a meat. Toro is adjacent to Ribera del Duero. Think what Sonoma is to Napa. A great value from the Vega Sicilia house.

A dark beast of a wine, the 2012 Pintia displayed notes of fig, plum, and balsamico, followed by brown spices, black earth and minerals. A wine of contrasts on the palate, as intense dark fruits saturated the senses before zesty acidity created an almost mouthwatering experience, yet a layer of fine tannin quickly firmed up the experience. It finished long of dark tary black fruits and spice.

Plum, blackberry, rich but refined with very full grain and ripe tannin that meshes well with the full, but not overblown Toro style of wine. I had this from a 3L a few days before and it was much more open and naturally in a better place being open and decanted naturally as this was near the end of the 3L.
Top 3 producer for me in the region.
American, French and Hungarian oak, 70-30 or 60-40 French to American, Hungarian <1%. 200k bottles of production.
