Captivating. But could use even more time. Elegant with leather and red fruit.

Vintage 2004 / what a benchmark for how good #rioja can be in excellent years. Tuilé brown rim, perfumed smell, elegance and still prominent: tannins. Give this wine time in a decanter. A treat.

After some heavy drinking of Cab, in particular Napa cab, it was great to go back to the old world and taste one of the more iconic Rioja.
I had this about 4 years ago, and don’t think much has changed. Fruit was restrained but still vibrant, along with herbs, cedar, caramel, and developing tertiary notes of prune, fungus, and slight hint of port. The palate is still a bit on the acrid side, yet broad and round. Tannins still has some grips.
Regal. And a long life ahead!

Better than the excellent ‘05 & ‘06 but will need more time. Succulent wet tobacco and dark, musty red fruit. Hauntingly good, superbly structured and built to last. 2020++
