Bodegas Caudalia
01 Paal Syrah
Tastes like a Syrah from somewhere in Santa Barbara County, which is not a bad thing taste-wise. But I’m always puzzled when European countries plant grapes that are indigenous to other countries. That aside, it’s very good. Nose is complex, with animal, vegetable, and mineral qualities (plus some nice fruit). There is an intense iron quality, cured salami, ripe boysenberry, and a little tobacco leaf. In the mouth it’s dark and rich, but the tannins are well integrated and unobtrusive. Acidity is a little lower than most Northern Rhônes, but enough to maintain balance. Despite my predispositions, I like it.

Sep 27th, 2022This needs air. Paired it with stewed pintos and turkey tacos on day one. Showed plenty of dark fruit and power, but day two, the nose blossomed adding more classic smokey, meaty and spicy elements.

Oct 16th, 2020Smokey bacon nose,
Croatian sour cherry preserves, dark chocolate, sea salt, Blueberry skin, alder smoke. Light tannin, zingy acidity.
What a great wine to relax the nerves on a Saturday night.

I was not expecting to like this as much as I do. Kind of like a hybrid of a Saint Joseph and a Sonoma Coast Syrah. Nose is very minerally and stony, with smoke and charred beef notes. A wee bit of red fruit. Dark and savory in the mouth. Loads of crushed rock flavors. Decent acids and tannins there but in check. Very good.

Dec 18th, 2019Interesting syrah from northern Spain. Bold, ripe blue and black fruits, lots of green olive and sage. Feels new world, and not in a bad way. Worth trying at the price, but not the most exciting or true-to-varietal effort.

Dec 14th, 2019I agree with @Tom Casagrande’s detailed review from 2022 of this lovely 100% cement-fermented, old large foudre-aged Spanish Syrah from Navarra, dark color, pure aromatics, good acidity, lingering finish, pretty impressive Syrah!!

Nov 1st, 2024Unique and torn on how I feel about it. Definitely needs some air time and food.
Black and blue fruits, smoked meats, and violets.
