Evangelho Vineyard Carignan

I just love the 100+ yr.-old Zins, Mataros, Carignanes and blends from the pure-sand soils of CCC. And Bedrock does such a great job with this Smithsonian-worthy fruit. This wine has a gorgeous nose of holiday-spiced tangy, oozy dark-red berries. The palate is a bit more reserved than the manic nose, but everything is in perfect balance. The tangy, deep fruit hits first, but there is zero jamminess and, in fact, it’s even a bit lithe and lean. At the back end of the palate it turns savory and there’s some nice minerality. Tannins in check and it’s got pretty nice length for a Carignane, which tends to say its goodbyes on the quicker side.

Darker in color a bit more subdued than many vintages, the ‘24 has a dusty raspberry nose and notes of funky red berry, red vines candy, and bitter orange with moderate tannins and more mild acidity than typical. It held up well to red sauce, as one would hope, but could probably use some more time to come together.

Big, rich, very tannic, tannins are pretty drying, this will need 4-6 years of cellaring at a minimum, longish finish, very good!

Dec 6th, 2025The ‘23 Evangelho Carignan is its typical pinkish, dusty purple with a light nose of red berries and vanilla. It has mouthwatering acidity at this early stage and plenty of tart cherry and spice. While no doubt a great food wine, it seems to lack the joyful nature of my favorite vintages.

Jul 27th, 2025Evangelho Carignan is back from Bedrock for the ‘22 vintage and this one is loaded with potential. It’s got firm tannins, plentiful zip, and lots of bright berries at this very young age. The nose is deeper and sweeter, maybe belying more balance to come. And for those that like the way a glass looks, perhaps the most stunning color I’ve seen, from deep, dusty purple to near dayglo pink on the edges. Worth a look and taste (and some cellaring if you have more than one)!

Somewhat interesting single #evangelhovineyard #carignan from Bedrock. This medium plus bodied red opens up pretty slow. After a couple of days in wine chiller, dusty black fruit, bruised plum, faint sweet tobacco notes. Initial push of savory character on palate, chocolate, blackberry, lots of acidity. However, there’s a flatness mid palate - there are much stronger values from this producer in their blends with wider distribution. #contracostacounty

Milky purple in the glass, it opens musty and dusty for a young wine with a great balance of richness and acidity. A touch of minerality too. A great food wine — felt a bit like a Barbera to me overall. Sadly this isn’t planned as an every year wine from Bedrock, just when the barrel samples warrant it and aren’t headed for the field blends Bedrock is known for
