So hard to find the vintage on this bottle. Well, anyway this wine is amazing and it proves to me that Aglianico and Syrah hold their alcohol better than any other red grapes. This is 15% and you would never know. I only found out just now reading past notes. The nose is so expansive with black fruits, stunning earthen (Tolkien?) mineral scents. Dead leaves, blackberry. It’s deep ocean. Stunning. This is so elegant and nimble with these slate like tannins. Big, but ripe tannins and tiny heat like one would fine in a top CDP. It’s part of the expression here. Finish is forever and clamps down. This will easily go 30 years.

Forgot to add my notes last weekend but we enjoyed this regardless of its 15%.

Lovely fruit, beautiful wine. Sweet core of juicy raspberry, tar, hint of menthol. Medium tannin. Bottle states 15% ABV but alcohol is well-integrated, just a touch of heat on the finish. Rustic elegance.

Aglianico as Musigny. This shit is bananas. It is a thing of great beauty. The nose is the perfect melange of echoes of elite Pinot Noir (Musigny comes to mind) but firmly rooted in the soul of Campanian Aglianico. It tows this line brilliantly. As Burgundian as the most elite Barolo but in a different way. De Vogue Musigny comes to mind.

Stunning bing cherry, and an elite florality. Dizzying in its complexity and relentlessness. This is some nose. 9.8. I can’t think if I’ve ever smelled a better aglianico. A true Burgundian interpretation. The nose is just a knockout. The palate has so much sweet, dark aglianico fruit and unreal sweetness but offset by this profound noble minerality. The level of dry extract is so impressive and as big a wine as this is it never feels heavy. Power with finesse. Both elite. The finish is just forever. It truly never ends. This will improve for 20+ years and I imagine it could flirt with perfection one day. No wonder this is on every important Michelin starred restaurant’s wine list in Italy.

@delectable cilento aglianico riserva

Nose is blueberry spice and blackberry. Elegant. Very integrated. Deep. A subtle richness. A hint of old school well made California cab. Very deep. Sensual. Some porcini. A ray of lilac shining through a window.

Palate is so elegant in fitting with the house style. Just pumps juiciness. Elegant blackberries. So silky. So juicy. A hint of spice but it’s more in the background. Some blackberry licorice. Maximally delicious. I can’t believe this is Aglianico. Wow. Stunning.

Finish has this palate coating freeze dried blackberry thing. So juicy and long. Like the flavors somehow self replicate.

On day 2 elegant plum flower on the nose. Really pretty.

Really a mind expanding wine. Would never have guessed Aglianico or 2008 or 15%. Quite herby and earthy but with some core of fruit too - long finish with good acid. Lovely mouthfeel as well. And a great pairing with Marcella Hazan’s long cooked bolognese.
