I love this wine but I’ll admit it’s niche. Glorious confectionary nose. Clearly too young, as this wine really sings starting at 10, but whatever, I got too much wine to drink them all at the perfect time. Sweet wood, stone fruits and intense minerality. Some pollen as well on the nose. Such a complex nose. But in 5 years watch out! Palate is so elegant and rich but fresh from the minerals and not the acid which is merely solid. Really coats the tongue. So good. The finish is stone fruits, sweet wood and that rock licking feeling on your tongue. Just a killer Grau because it’s got that Laible magic.

Oct 1st, 2024Wild mint, rich woody butter extract, stone fruits, peach, peach flesh, rich, extract red, insane stone fruits, peach flesh, good energy, richness and energetic, I can’t believe how fruity it is. Fantastic clarity to the fruit. Needs air. After 7 hours of air this has picked up elite finesse and so much mineral force, length and complexity. Now a 9.5 from a 9.4.

Sep 16th, 2023At almost seven years old, ideally when this wine should be drunk, this is unreal. Wow. Nose of pear, melon and some airy minerals. Almost and ocean breeze and gorgeous kiss of oak. But the palate is the showstopper here. Racy, energetic and super precise, this is Grand Cru all the way. Lean and juicy with only a hint of richness but it is deftly there and part of it all. Lemony, grapefruit finish. Stunning. Icing on a cake texture and terrific, grip, power and depth but nimble and no extra fat as 16 is a lean, no frills vintage. Staggeringly elegant. This is so good and so Laible. Nothing else like it. Almost a 9.6.

Dec 14th, 2022Wow. This is bananas great! Nose has the typical youthful wood of this cuvee and it always needs time but wow there are stone fruits, wet stones, lemon, lime and a hint of underarm. So so gorgeous. Super floral with a top note of sugar snap peas. Palate is superb. Young but concentrated and gorgeously integrated wood. Wonderfully framing. Stone fruits galore like apricot and peach but with a feral/gamey quality that is super clean and engaging. This needs 5 years but is quite an accomplishment. Amazingly pure, juicy and balanced. Terrific grip and phenolics give almost a tannic like impression on the finish. Long. Compelling complexity. A brilliant wine! Awesome freshness and acidity. So fine. So refined. This is the counterpoint to the Ziereisen Grauburgunder Jaspis Alte Reben.

Aug 31st, 2021Always needs age but I taste a sample every year for science! Stone fruits, apricot, spice, so complex. Really expressive for a young Am Buhl. Nuanced. Floral. Wow. I’m very impressed. Palate is stunning. Wow, what acid and freshness and concentrated like crazy stone fruits. Long, sappy and mineral. Really mineral. Huge, dense, grand Cru all the way. So much dry extract. Incredible amount of material here. More akin to Grand Cru Chablis than anything I’ve ever had from Germany. Stunningly long and expressive.

Apr 27th, 2020Needs 5 years at this point but so so promising. Spicy apple, spices, discreet framing oak, supermineral, floral and a deep nose that is always unfolding. Complex and concentrated with a richness and also a freshness. Ripe apples and pears abound with minimal stone fruits I usually expect from Grau. Very pure. Very clean. Needs 5 years as it almost shows backwards but I had this on release and it will get there.

1 person found it helpfulJan 13th, 2019Pop and pour. Disappearing quickly. On the nose: pear, lemon oil, wet stone, hazelnut. On the palate: lovely acidity, but really stunning density, hazelnut oil, lemon, soft pepper and limestone. Wow. Really lovely and slathered in minerality.
