From Telmo Rodriguez and his venture in Valdeorras in northwestern Spain, this is a great entry level Mencia. A great value at about $12-15. Elegant and earthy, with red cherry, plum, licorice spice, nary a trace of wood in this. Excellent acidity, medium grain tannin that is fine and supple, medium bodied and a medium+ finish.

Bafflingly elegant and intense at the same time, this texturally is like a great GC Chambolle or Vosne in texture. Satiny and silky, with persistent perfume like aromatics and layers of fruit, minerality and florals unfolding on the palate, I look forward to tasting this in another 7-10 years. It hits all the notes of a great wine in a way that seems like it was effortless. Telmo spent the better part of 2 decades from what I recall bringing this site back to life and tweaking this to get it right. .8 hectares of old vines (80 or 90 years) provide the core of this wine. #telmo #beatas #rioja — 8 years ago
