Bright tart cherry on the nose, fresh with gnarly herbs and tobacco underneath. On the palate fresh, with clear, almost tangy fruit. Vivid, tasty and bright, but not particularly profound.

This producer creates exceptionally expressive Sangiovese and is undoubtedly one of my “go to” houses for Brunello. Lots of licorice and leather in the ‘04 but the fruit is muted and muddled a bit. It’s there it’s just reticent and overpowered by the tannins......much like the Celtics were overpowered by Lebron (love him or hate him you have to respect him and count yourself lucky for having the opportunity to watch him perform) tonight. This underperformed vs. expectations and is tough to recommend with the ‘10 singing like it is. I usually prefer aged Brunello (and especially Barolo) but the ‘10 is just sensational. The ‘04 can’t compete and I don’t think it’s improving.

First one I’ve opened in at least 10 years. Still got plenty of life left fruit a little tamer now.

great nose of tobacco, forestfloor, earth, leather, some licorice and stewed red fruits. Tasty and bright. Juicy and still some fleshy, sweet ripe fruits. Ends long with the acidity of sour cherry. Very, very nice and A point!

Mid transparency. Real depth to the dark cherry pitched fruit with a broad channel of acidity driving a long and saturated finish. Really blossomed and integrated after being open for over an hour. Might not be fashionable or pricey but that’s more to do with the large production than the quality. Excellent

2004:. 9.4-9.5. Brunello at its best, drinking beautifully at 16 (from a great vintage) with more years ahead. So well balanced, with a firm backbone still supporting fruit and leather flavors. Outstanding nose: you can smell from 2 feet away. Classic. $67 from Zachy’s many years ago.
