This is only my second ever German Riesling, the first also (I think) being a Kabinett that I tried, as a relative newbie to wine as a whole, some seven or eight years ago - and hated. But something about Germany’s bottomless pit of wine styles, and the fierce delineation of its vineyards, appeals to me, and as someone who drinks far more old- than new world wine, it was about time I popped a cork and dived in.

In short, this was an immensely enjoyable wine - particularly on the second night. Rough notes from the night as follows: apricot, apple tart, a slight petrol note, petrichor, and a saline edge, with passion fruit lining the finish. The smell reminds me of boat trips in Greece - diesel engines combined with fresh sea salt, I guess. Immediate tangy impression on the front of the tongue that lasts through the finish. Very ripe and linear. Medium acidity in this off-dry style.

I’ve now massively got the bug. Anyone got some Spätlese they could lend?

Stunningly clean and fresh with obvious sweetness (only 7.5% ABV) and cleansing acidity. At 12 years a hint of Kerosene appearing on the nose. Essentially a little simple but it is only a Kabinett. Earlier in its life there was more mineral and yellow peach and now the sweetness dominates any earlier nuances. Michael Schmidt who reviewed this wine for Jancis Robinson gave a very short drinking window of 2008 to 2013. It is still a pleasant drink in 2019 but I still believe there is little point in cellaring Kabinett over 10 years at least for Dr. Loosen. JJ Prum may fare better in this regard.

Juicy green apple, lime leaf, nashi pear, tangerine, faint honey, chamomile and a touch of slate. Real succulence to the wine, giving eveidence if it’s medium dry mouthfeel. Cleansing acid gives balance. High acid. Length is medium to medium plus.
9% abv. 48 grams rs.

I could bang on about a flood of lime and slate but simply to say a delicious drink. I can see why German Riesling is James Halliday's "desert island drink". 17+ This is the Kabinett not a Beerenauslese. Had another bottle on 24 January 2016. Citrus and slate notes. Delicious as always 8.5% Alc. Evidence of petillance on inside of wine glass.

This one necessary on a sunny evening post-WSET exam. Stony on the nose with apricot and lime; ultra clean, racy and grapes across the palate with a tonicky spritz, and the acidity sweeping the fruit off its feet for the long, final flourish. Yep.
