Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2018

2018. New vintner for us. Full bodied, but with the acidity to pair great with the citrus and herb forward vegetable and seafood centric small plates. We really enjoyed it as it warmed slightly and opened up through our progression. — 3 days ago

Giant Steps

Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016

See previous notes 20 weeks ago and 79 weeks ago. My last bottle of the 2016 GS Applejack Pinot Noir. The pale colour belies the strength of the palate. Quite delicious in fact. . Applejack Vineyard probably my favourite of the Giant Steps Cuvées. Red fruited - succulent savoury red cherry. — a month ago

@Bob McDonald thanks for the rec: had a lovely tasting there! We tasted through all the 22 PNs. For another data point: my wife and I both preferred the Wombat to the Applejack. Our favorite PN of the tasting was the Tasmanian Fatal Shore!

@Aravind A I can’t disagree with your preference for The Fatal Shore. Under the new ownership of the Jackson Family the style may change a little from the fabulous winemaking of Steve Flamsteed. My recollection of the Wombat Creek was perhaps the use of more whole bunch in the ferment. They are all very good.

Nocton Vineyard is also great.

Tarra Warra

Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2021

Making notes from memory 2 days later. A departure from trying local Gippsland wines back to the ever reliable Yarra Valley for Pinot Noir and Tarrawarra. Red fruited and sappy. Owned by another Melbourne billionaire, and philanthropist, Marc Besen (like the recently visited Point Leo owned by fellow billionaire and brother in law in John Gandel). . Worth a visit if you’re in the Yarra not only for the wines but the fabulous Australian Art Collection. I had lunch here around 5 or 6 years ago and viewed the art and enjoyed their Pinot and Chardonnay. Footnote: Marc Besen passed away 2 months ago aged 99. — 4 months ago

Yarra Valley Heathcote Shiraz Viognier Blend 2019

Took some time to open up but became delicious. Lots of fruit but not sweet. The splash of viognier softened the Syrah a bit. — 3 months ago

Yarra Valley Syrah 2021

Gorgeous. So elegant and powerful. Needed a decant to blow off some reduction but that was ok. Stunning! Beautiful wine. — 5 months ago
