The Vineyardist 2nd label.
This one surprised me by how much air it needed to open up. Had a splash on day 1 and immediately corked it back up for a day 2 decant. Definitely not an over extracted Cabernet just to please the masses. My ratings might be higher than others but I work these wines to get the best out of them.
Interesting note I found-
The Vineyardist is a Diamond Mountain property with a long history. In the late 19th century it was purchased by a Dutch shipping captain who planted vineyards and made wine. During prohibition the vineyards were replaced with nut and prune orchards. In 2000 the property was purchased by Dirk Fulton and Becky Kukkola, who began replanting some of the 80 acres to vineyards. — 21 days ago
2007 colheita, bottled in 2022. You can't go wrong with Dirk Niepoort's colheitas and this freshly bottled 2007 is a beauty. Niepoort colheitas are typically bottled after minimum 10 years in barrel (the legal minimum being 7 years) and the first bottling for this 2007 took place in March 2018. While they won't go bad in bottle, you might as well get them as fresh as possible. Brilliant tawny colour. Wonderful aromatics with candied fruits, orange peel, salted caramel and coffee. In the mouth it is amazingly fresh, with bright acidity balancing the dried figs and plums and the refined tannic backbone. Impressively long finish with candied orange, dark chocolate and coffee. A beautiful meditation wine and exceptional value. Abv. 18,9%. — 3 years ago
What a lovely Pinot Noir this is. Cherry flavor and nose, fruity but elegant. The finish is complex, going from sour cherry to a mild astringency. A great find and value under $25. — 2 years ago
2016 vintage. Dirk Niepoort's answer to Burgundy and it actually has a Pinot Noir like colour and mouthfeel. This is a very unusual Douro from very old vines. Delicate nose with sour cherries , pomegranate and flowers. It is all about finesse and subtlety. Very long. Delicious and expensive (80 euros), but if you see the prices of Portuguese high end wines these days it almost seems a bargain. — 3 years ago
