Suave, polished, and utterly drinkable, the 2019 Selección 874 from the Wine Society is a brilliant modern Rioja with great heritage. Produced by La Rioja Alta, this feels more forward and - perhaps, immediately - drinkable than the Ardanza, a more serious Reserva for the long haul. But this has plenty of stuffing to age well, and I think it will become a beautiful, graceful Rioja with another 15+ years in bottle. That’s if, of course, the rest of my case can wait…

The 2017 ‘Component Collection’ Malbec shows bright violets with blackberry compote and white pepper dusted mocha tones alongside scorched earth that all take shape in the glass. The palate is plush showing a gorgeous sense of richness and complexity. Blueberry cordial and Black Forest Cake flavors march on parade with espresso bean and dark currants on the palate. We just had the 2011 vintage and apparently it has nothing in common with prior vintages. Given time, super chocolate notes to start and later leather and tobacco flavors and nose come through. Not what I would typically expect of a malbec but a nice wine with a good rare steak...and pretty damn good with chicken — 8 years ago
