In this case, Mr Parker was pretty much on target: “The 2000 The Factor (1,000 cases) has benefited from the fact that Powell decided not to produce a Run Rig in 2000. It is a compelling wine of great richness, multiple dimensions, and glorious levels of blackberry liqueur-like fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, melted licorice, espresso, and leather. Sweet, expansive, and opulent, it is a lusty, hedonistic, mouth-staining Shiraz that should drink well for 10-15 years.”
. . . Except it’s now 20 years old and shows no signs of fading 😋

My good buddy @Bryan Kesting introduced me to Agricola a few months ago, so I went on the hunt for a few bottles!
As a long time fan of SamiOdi, it’s been a treat watching a new style of Aussie Shiraz become more widely known…picking the fruit earlier, lower ABV, different aging vessels, etc. Agricola wines are made by Callum Powell (son of Torbreck founders).
Mix of 110yr old vines (Ringland Three Rivers) and 30yr old vines (Burley & Naimanya). 100% whole cluster and carbonic maceration. 13.2ABV
Deep purple color and intense heady aromas (a la SamiOdi). My memory bank takes me to some of the Pax Sonoma Hillsides that I’ve had…very Saint Joseph-esque but with a touch more richness. This shows more density than the Pax, but the flavor profile is very similar. So complex aromatically with layers of sweet and slightly savory Syrah fruit (underripe blackberries, smoked meat, iron, dark florals), and crunchy stems. There’s a steak of green down the middle that nods to more Syrah than Shiraz (maybe that’s the cooler Eden Valley coming through). Tasty. — 8 months ago
17’Powell & Son Roussanne Marsanne.
Callum Powell convinced his father to make this wine. Happy he did so.
This is a 70%-30% blend.
FROM THE WINERY-
“The Roussanne Marsanne shows notes of butterscotch, honeyed citrus, stone fruit, white florals and apricot kernel. The palate is shows creamy phenolic texture, though not in the slightest part oily. Flavours of stone fruit and honey abound with light lemony acid to maintain the long finish. The wine finishes with white peach and subtle savoury ham hock, with persistent phenolics driving to the end of the palate.”
FYI- They have 2 $750 dollar Shiraz. Had to take a double look.😳 — 5 years ago

My last of three bottles. When I first had this a couple years ago, I was smitten. I love Marsanne in all forms and thought this was (and is) a fun expression.
Opened alongside a 2020 Vasse Felix Filius Chardonnay and a 2021 Cloudburst Chardonnay, so three Aussie whites. Honeycomb galore aromatically…honey drizzled tropical fruits, honeyed marcona almonds, spiced pear. Texturally this has all the waxy and rich Marsanne notes but there is a distinct plantain note alongside burnt vanilla that jump out. It’s warm, rich and full-bodied but a great expression from Australia. Great pairing with garlic fries!
Followed over a few days and stayed consistent. Based on how this is drinking now and the style it was made in, consuming these in the next few years is probably best if you are looking to enjoy a balanced profile. — 17 days ago
