La Tache

Domaine Francois Lamarche

La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole Pinot Noir 2015

The 2nd vintage of La Grande Rue we had at the Burgundy dinner in Sydney 6 weeks ago. This was the 2015. A very Vosne Romanee nose - perfumed and enticing. Sweeter fruit than the 2012. Given its prime location as being over the road (La Grande Rue) from La Romanee and La Romanee Conti it doesn’t reflect the quality of those 2 vineyards nor the price thankfully. Amazing that the separation of the width of a narrow road makes such a difference. The 1.65 hectares of La Grande Rue dates back to the 15th century. It is simply a continuation of La Tache - lighter bodied (and lighter priced). — 2 months ago

Best bottle I’ve ever had in my life. Blew the 95 La Tache out of the water, and the La Tache wasn’t bad at all. — 3 years ago

Clos des Chênes Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2023

Lyle Fass
9.8

Glory is this wine. Just one of the best wines in Burgundy now. After the 22 I had large expectations and this surpassed them. Nose is just bananas. Not literal bananas. The other type of bananas. The most complex cherry diaspora. Sour, mid season, late season and black. Spice galore and florals up the wazoo. Earth, limestone, dead leaves, living leaves and wet leaves. The nose is a 9.8 on the pop and pour. Just insane. Wild mint. What stands out the most is the layering and the clarity. Also the breadth. Wow that inner mouth perfume and endless, boundless energy that has the same fruit energy as La Tache. What I mean by that is this wine, yes can be about minerals as CDC is rocky, but man the fruit in 22 and now 23 is just in another register. Sappy, poised and clear as the sky is blue on a cloudless day. Yes the tannins are firm but you know with air they will melt into the fruit. The nobility of this site never fails to blow me away. Unreal concentration and density and just insane length. The tannins are velvety, sweet and intense but so so high class. Nose has so much florality, spice and red cherry fruit one cannot believe it. This is just insane. It’s almost a perfect wine. The balance is just beyond and the structure is incredible. This is a 50 year CDC. What a finish. Let’s see where this goes. After an hour the nose is remarkable. So deep, so nuanced, so spicy, so floral. Provocative. Palate is silky, sweet and so dense. Pumps the fruit out like an old set of Wilson Puppies. Unreal balance and purity. But this is built like a brick house. Let’s see where this goes. Will unfurl more but it’s a slow one! The concentration and tiny berry fruit intensity is off the charts. Now after 17 hours open its nose is full blown complex and flat out stunning. The cherry trifecta of sour/mid season and black. Mint and bramble plus wonderful and gorgeous sous bois. Stoney as well. All velvety bramble and such elegant and ripe tannin. A wave. Stunning inner mouth aromas, tiny berry fruit intensity and stunning purity. This seems like it’s more classic than the 22. Even on day 3 this is stunning. Lost nothing. — 6 months ago

Estate Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2014

1 hr. decant & was ready to rock with my Duck 🦆 Dinner 🥘!!! Happy that Gary Pisoni put La Tache cuttings in his dirty underwear in 1983 prior TSA Bullshit & grafted onto vines in his Santa Lucia Highlands vineyard. This “Poor Man’s” La Tache is always Smokin’ great! AG says 95 Points & his review is point on in relationship to the wine. Cheers 🍇🍷👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 — 6 years ago

La Tâche Pinot Noir 1975

1975 was one of the worst Burgundy vintages. This La Tache, light, aromatically brilliant, balanced with a weak mid palate and a non existent finish was still a good lunch wine. Slow oxed for 30 minutes prior to drinking — 6 months ago

Les Malconsorts Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

I have been a long time fan of Les Malconsorts as it is a neighbour of La Tache at a fraction of the price. We chose not to decant with the advice of the Somm but after 40 minutes and vigorous swirling maybe we should have. Initially closed but then developed a savoury red fruited nose. Extended through to the mid weight palate and developing with aeration but with no great complexity. After an hour more aromatics and more alluring - a red fruited, red floral, verging on meaty perfume. A recent Malconsorts I had from Sylvain Caithard exceeded this one. A very good but not a “wow” wine. One of those Burgundies which do not live up to expectations nor the price paid. — 2 years ago

@Bob McDonald We all talk about "closed" bottles but, in your humble opinion, can bottle be too "open?" I say yes.

@Scott@Mister A’s-San Diego A couple of comments. For a Premier Cru as prestigious as Malconsorts only 7 years old might be a bit young to be tasting it. Also Maison Albert Bichot perhaps does not source the fruit quality of say, Sylvain Caithard. In fact I believe the Somm said that Bichot purchases fruit from other growers within Malconsorts.

Also, as mentioned, we should have decanted.
